What is flicker?
Flicker refers to the variation in light output of a light source over time with a certain frequency and period. Without proper electronic circuits, such as ballasts, drivers, or power supplies, the light source will produce flicker, and the larger the fluctuation in output light flux, the more severe the flicker.
What causes flicker?
Flicker is related to not only the power supply, but also the technical performance of the light source and the unreasonable lighting design. For many lighting fixtures, the working current of the light source must fluctuate with the input voltage, which directly leads to fluctuation in the light output and thus the occurrence of flicker. For example, for incandescent lamps, if the driver is supplied with 50 Hz AC mains power, the frequency of their light flashing is 100 Hz after the negative half cycle and positive half cycle are superimposed. Similarly, for gas discharge lamps that use inductive ballasts, the output light frequency also fluctuates with the power supply frequency. In addition, the instantaneous fluctuation amplitude of the power grid is between 10% and 20%, which deepens the light fluctuation of the lighting fixture.
